A Study on Nursing Students Responses to Elderly Simulation Experience

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe nursing students responses to elderly simulation experience. Participants in this study were 30 senior nursing students who were taking the practicum of geriatric nursing in 2015. They were divided into five groups and each group consisted of 5 participants. Data were collected through focus group interviews from January 28, 2016 to February 17, 2016. Collected data were analyzed utilizing the phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi. According to the data analysis, 20 themes, 9 theme clusters, and 4 categories were extracted. The categories were ¡®Viewing older adults negatively prior to elderly simulative experience, ¡®Striving to live in old age, ¡®Changing attitude,¡¯ and ¡¯Preparing for the future after experience. The findings show that elderly simulation program influences nursing students¡¯ perspectives toward older adults and elderly simulation programs need to be activated and developed more.
